The characteristic of skin that indicates severe frostbite is hard and unmovable skin. In cases of severe frostbite, the affected tissues undergo significant damage due to freezing, causing ice crystals to form within the cells. This cellular damage leads to a loss of blood flow and can result in the skin becoming rigid and hard.

In this state, the skin may appear pale, waxy, or even numb, reflecting the severe extent of the frostbite. Unlike normal or mildly affected skin, which may still have some pliability or warmth, severely frostbitten skin has lost its flexibility and sensation, indicating that immediate medical attention is necessary.
